AutoCAD – a brief history
publicat in: General // Publicata pe 05.06.2023
In the absence of AutoCAD, modern architecture would be so different. We are talking about a software app imagined for the 2D & 3D building plans, initially developed for Windows by Autodesk, an American company, and later introduced for Unix and Macintosh. Still, far from its initial purpose, less known by the public: a streamlined solution required by the drafting engineers from Boeing, Ford, GM, or MIT, working in the aerospace and automotive industries. The rest is history: interior design projects for apartments or houses that include bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, or living rooms designed with AutoCAD.

At its core, AutoCAD was based on Interact CAD, the first CAD system introduced in 1977 and re-released in 1979 (originally called Micro CAD). Later, the first official version of AutoCAD was introduced in December 1982 and by 1986 it became the Computer Assisted Design software market’s leader. Its most recent version (2020), represents the 34th iteration of this popular Windows program.

In case you did not know already, at first, engineered drawing required large sheets of paper and drawing boards. The “best part” was that you could not change the drawing on paper, therefore the sketches need to be done all over again. In this context, the first attempts in the CAD domain took place in 1963, due to Ivan Sutherland who introduced Sketchpad, a 2D sketching program.

All these stories might seem unreal now for the current generation without any exposure to the topic since even the simplest interior design projects for kitchens/bathrooms needed many hours to complete. These days, AutoCAD allows engineers and architects to focus on really important issues, such as design and functionality.
